Chess Club starts on October 3, 2018!
Chess Club - every Wednesday morning from 7:05-7:50am in the ORES Cafeteria starting October 3, 2018.
As of Oct. 1, 2018, the Chess Club is full. If you would like to sign up for the waitlist, please click here.
Benefits of learning/playing chess:
• Improves concentration and memory
• Enhances reading and math skills
• Fosters logic, critical thinking, and creativity
• Encourages and rewards hard work
We have beginning and intermediate/advanced tables, quick lessons each week, and beginner activities to help introduce the game of chess.
We are charging a nominal, non-refundable fee of $5 per child, for the entire school year. While the PTO supports Colts Chess, this fee helps cover the costs for replacement chess sets, tournament fees and other materials.
Colts Chess will be held Wednesday mornings, 7:05am-7:50am, in the cafeteria (students enter through the 2nd set of doors), starting Wednesday, October 3, concluding with our end of year breakfast party on Wednesday, April 10, 2019. (Note: Colts Chess will NOT meet on Dec. 26, 2018, Jan. 2 and Jan. 23, 2019.)
If you are dropping your child off at school before the car line starts, you will need to park on the south side of the building and walk your child into the building.
If your child takes the bus, we know s/he may arrive later, but please remind him/her to go straight to the cafeteria.
No food or drinks will be allowed at the playing tables.
Please make sure your child is registered, as we are required to check names off a roster. Students not on the roster will not be permitted past the security doors until the 7:20am bell.
Students will be sent to class at 7:50am with an excuse slip for their teacher. They are expected to go straight to class, otherwise they will be marked tardy.
It goes without saying, but school rules are club rules, too. Kids are expected to be considerate, show good sportsmanship, clean up after themselves, etc. Parents will be contacted if there are any issues, and kids may be told to head to class if they exhibit inappropriate behavior (cheating, inappropriate language, throwing chess pieces, disrespecting parents/volunteers/kids, etc.).
Parents are welcome to sign in as visitors and play chess with their kids; however, we ask that parents wishing to play with their kids bring their own chess boards, so that we have enough chess sets for all Colts Chess members.
Colts Chess wouldn't be the success that it is without our fantastic Parent and Community Volunteers! On the sign-up form, we ask if you are able to help us out on Wednesday mornings.
If you can join us, please email our Chess Club coordinator. We need assistance every week with the following:
Setting up chess sets
Monitoring chess games
Teaching mini-lessons with small groups
Putting away chess sets
Wiping down cafeteria tables
Wheeling chess sets back to storage
April 2019 Scholastic Tournament:
We will hold a Mini-Tournament in the spring to determine the two Colts Chess players that will represent ORES at the April Scholastic tournament of the Greensboro Chess Club. More information will be sent before tournament sign-up.
Thank you very much for your interest! We look forward to a great year!
Sign up to Volunteer here - we can't do this without parent help!
